Floor Care Guide
We at Floormaster think that the best way to get true value from our service is to provide you with information about how to keep your wooden floor in the best condition possible. We’ve put together a list of what we think are the most important steps involved in preserving your floor finish.
- Do Not Wet/Mop Your Floor
- Avoid Dirt & Grit
- Avoid Detergents
- Heavy Duty Mopping
- Cleaning Your Wooden Floor
- Maintenance
Do Not Wet/Mop Your Floor
- If you wash your wooden floor with water, it can soak into the wood and in turn damage the floor.
- The floorboards can warp and stain.
- Floormaster also recommends that water spillages on your wooden floor be dried immediately.
- When cleaning your wooden floor only use a damp cloth.
- Never Wax Your Wooden Floor.
- It is highly inadvisable to wax your floor as it can adversely react with the varnish.
- It makes refinishing extremely difficult, and will void any warranties on your product.
Avoid Detergents
Washing up liquids and floor tile cleaners can build up and then create problems when it’s time to put maintenance coats on your wooden floor. They also dull your floor finish.
Cleaning Your Wooden Floor
- Vacuum your wooden floors and remove any dust and grit.
- Damp mopping is the fastest way to deep clean your floor.
- Use neutral PH wood cleaner and water or the floor manufacturer’s recommended products.
- Wet the mop and ring it so it’s damp.
- Wet the floor with the mop.
- Dip the mop into clean water and ring it as dry as you can.
- Then mop the floor again.
- Alternatively use a spray bottle, floor cleaner and a cleaning pad.
Avoid Dirt & Grit
Dirt, grit and sand act like sandpaper on a wooden floor finish, causing scratches and dulling.
Heavy Duty Mopping
- If your wooden floors are properly sealed, a little extra water and cleaner will not damage your floor, but use common sense.
- Vinegar, often prescribed to clean wood floors, does nothing for removing grease and soil.
Maintenance
- Use doormats inside and outside of doorways to help prevent grit and dirt being tracked into your wooden floors.
- Place a mat at your kitchen sink.
- Wipe up spills immediately.
- Put soft cushion pads under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching.
- Avoid walking on your wood floors with sports shoes and high heels.
- Do not slide your heavy furniture on wood flooring, lift it into position.
- Don’t place mats on your newly finished floor for a period of 2 weeks.
- This is the curing process time.
